Spring Spur is a working horse property in the Victorian High Country & home of Bogong Horseback Adventures, owned and operated by the Baird family since 1986. A visit to Spring Spur is an immersive experience where you can reconnect in cosy comfort with the natural world and farm life, plant your feet on healthy soil, fill your lungs with mountain air, and your vision with spectacular alpine scenery.
Horses have been at the core of Spring Spur since it’s inception and remain a central part of its business and lifestyle. In more recent years, with the expansion of family and generational change, new avenues of interest and talent have been explored – adding a multilayered experience and a richness to the brand. Spring Spur now offers accommodation and paddock to plate meals, function venue hire, and a wine label to complement its award-winning horse riding experiences. It is the passion of the Baird family and their love for it shines through in all that they do.
Spring Spur wines are handcrafted in small batches using gentle processing techniques. The winemaking process is guided by the fruit and allows for expression of the uniqueness of each individual site and vintage. Picked from selected single vineyards each variety is chosen due to its status as a family favourite.
Alex Phillips was born and raised in South Africa; one of the most vibrant and diverse wine-producing countries in the world. She graduated cum laude from the University of Stellenbosch in 2013, where she was awarded the prestigious Prof PA van der Bijl medal and crowned Best Academic Student: Viticulture and Oenology. After mentoring under celebrated winemaker Adam Mason at Mulderbosch Vineyards, she launched into vintages across the world before finding her feet as winemaker at Billy Button wines in the Alpine Valleys of North East Victoria. It is here she found love; not only in the picturesque winemaking region itself but in her husband, Lin. The pair lives on Spring Spur – a beautiful working horse property in the Kiewa Valley where Alex is free to spread her wings and do what she does best – bringing Spring Spur Wines to life.
The Winery Dog
Mana the rescue pup loves to be wherever Alex is and enjoys going into the winery and being part of the action. She is now an essential part of the winery crew and keeps everyone smiling throughout the workday as only a happy pup can.
Lin grew up on Spring Spur farm with his brother and a pony called Gumnut. A horseman before he could walk, he is a man of many talents and the go-to MacGyver for all projects great and small. Before settling into his management position of the family farm in 2009, Lin tucked a degree in multimedia design into his tool belt and set off to explore the globe. Since then he has played an integral role in developing the Spring Spur brand into the multi-faceted success it is today. Always up for a laugh and not afraid of hard work, he is the inspiration.
